Birds: Ringing, Surveys and Dawn Chorus

Introduction

Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May 2017 ¦  Price: £50 ¦ only 9 places available
This 2 day workshop is subsidised to make it a very accessible learning experience.

The course will provide you with a ‘toolkit’ of bird identification techniques to enable you to begin or continue your journey with bird recognition.  You will learn how to identify birds, making close observations to allow you to recognise different bird species. You will learn how to use binoculars, learn which bird characteristics to look out for as well as how to conduct a simple bird survey.  All these tools will assist you with your own bird identification while also equipping you with techniques you can use to show other people how they too can identify birds.

By the end of the course we aim to get you familiar with a small number of common bird species, recognising their shape, song, call, and colour variations.  This basic skill will give you the basis for comparison whatever species you may encounter in the future,  If you are already familiar with birds, we aim to extend your knowledge while allowing time to focus your observations on the detail of particular species.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop will be pitched at beginner to intermediate level and will therefore suit those with little experience and a desire to improve.

  • students, trainees and those with ambition for a career in the biodiversity and land management sector
  • those with a fledgling interest in bird ID looking to deepen their knowledge
  • recent graduates starting out in the nature conservation sector
  • volunteers with NGO’s where a basic knowledge of birds will be of huge value.

How it will work

The course will primarily be field based, supplemented by occasional classroom sessions delivered in our training yurt. The emphasis will be on watching birds and their behaviour with good periods of time taken to observe avian activity in detail.  An early start on Sunday to catch the dawn chorus (06.00) will be followed by breakfast (provided) and, weather permitting, an opportunity to get up close and personal with birds caught as part of our regular bird ringing programme.

These activities will both inspire you and equip you with the necessary tools to continue bird identification immediately post-training.
