Wildlife24 Mid Devon is an Ambios Ltd project supported by Awards for All.

BioBlitz logoDuring the summer of 2011 a number of 24-hour wildlife surveys (BioBlitzs) were held at schools in Mid Devon. Initially funded by Awards for All the project expanded, via funding from JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) and LSIS (Learning and Skills Improvement Service), to support school and public BioBlitz events in Devon and Somerset. Some of our results have been posted on the award winning Open University iSpot website.

What is Wildlife24 and BioBlitz

Wildlife24 provided a focus for children and adults to get involved directly with wildlife in our local area through a series of 24-hour ‘BioBlitz’ events at school sites in the Credtion Learning Community (the primary schools from which the local secondary gains many of its pupils).

BioBlitz wildlife surveys record ALL flora and fauna over a single 24-hour continuous period. Local naturalists assisted with identifying species and were supported by volunteers. Each survey produced a pictorial record of results for dissemination to the local community.

Wildlife24 Partnership

The project partnership comprises Ambios not-for-profit environmental education organisation, the local Learning Community (representing all 14 schools), Mid Devon Natural History Society (BioBlitz naturalists), the Open University iSpot project (species identification support) and Devon Adult and Community Learning (event support). Two primary schools will now be exemplars by taking the Wildlife24 information and designing an active and focused biodiversity management and learning scheme.

The project will encourage a Wildlife24 team of parents and local community volunteers to help implement and oversee a 12 month practical habitat enhancement plan to increase biodiversity around the school grounds and integrate the natural world into school, adult and family learning.
