Belize Coral Reefs

27 May 2003 17:13:22

Projects like WRIScS are very important to the
preservation of our barrier reef and all its values. It would be great if more
projects like this happened in central america to obtain support in coastal
environmental management. Their expertise is critical in Central America.

Habitat Mapping

27 May 2003 17:42:05

To Whom It May Concern: I support the WRIScS
project in Central America. It provided good info for management considerations
esp. when funding for these kinds of projects are hard to come by in most C.A.
countries. The habitat mapping done in Bze. is essential to improve the
management of our Marine Protected areas. It is a vital tool to asssess habitat
conditions and habitat concervation is essential to mainatin our biodiveristy.
Please consider all our opinions in support for the continued project in C. A.
Thanks

WRIScS programme

28 May 2003 02:20:42

My name is Jonathan. I was a teacher in Belize
from 1989 to 1992. I have seen first-hand how important it is to maintain and
protect our ecosystems. I am in the process of forming a non-profit organization
to support the education system of Belize and I want to provide my support to
WRIScS for all the work their programs do and intend to do. Having an
organization like WRIScS is very important for the natuaral resources of the
Caribbean.

Daniel Ballestero from the Laboratorio de
Oceanografía y Manejo Costero Universidad Nacional-Heredia Costa Rica
(dab2@una.ac.cr) has sent us some information
about the ongoing study of watershed-coastal zone interactions on the Rio San
Juan, on the frontier between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, a project relating
directly to WRIScS aims. You can read about this project here,
and I have asked Daniel to sent us some more information and a submission in
Spanish.

Muchas gracias.

[The aims and methods of this project strike me as being very interesting. I
have some general questions which maybe someone may be able to help me with.

1. Is there any institution or group in Guatemala that is monitoring sediment
and nutrient loads through the Izabal/Rio Dulce system to the Belize Barrier
reef or adjacent coastal habitats?
2. Are their any empirical studies analysing/quantifying such impacts
3. What type of field data has been collected in the past by other regional and
international programmes looking at the same issue (eg CARICOMP, IOC etc). What
is the plan to incorporate and utilise such data in this next project? ]

[ There is no institution monitoringtransport of sediment and nutrients to the reef.
Other work is being undertaken which contributes to this understanding however.
Defensores de la Naturaleza (2001- ) are monitoring nutrient influx and physico-
chemical parameters in Lake Izabal and (since 2003) the vertical flux of sediment.
There are also the studies of Dix (1999), Basterrechea (1993) and Brison (1976)
with with ecosystem information and which serve as benchmarks. Also CEMA
and DIGI (USAC) have undertaken WQ studies in the Bay of Amatique.]

1.   Many seem unaware of the scheduled demise of the SeaWiFS mission in
December, 2003 – although free SeaWiFS ocean colour images have features in a
lot of regional stidies.  An unofficial "Future of SeaWiFS" website has been
set up to gauge the degree of community support, nationally (USA) and
internationally, for continuing SeaWiFS observations. This forum should: 1)
provide an accurate consensus and 2) allow the SeaWiFS-user community to
present a united front. Please express your concerns about the future of the
SeaWiFS research mission by voting at this website by June 21, 2003. A
Community Letter will be forwarded to Congress and various US and foreign
agencies with the survey information.

Comments:

From my monitoring and measurements class, I came up with this definition for
coastal monitoring:

Coastal monitoring is the planning and implementation of a data collection
system and the qualitative and quantitative analysis of this data. This usually
involves several techniques. e.g. oxygen, temperature, salinity measurement;
collection, identification of marine organisms; benthic/pelagic sampling
techniques including mark-recapture, transect-quadrat, video methods; and
statistical analysis of ecological indices; remote sensing; water quality and
environmental impact.

Coastal monitoring aims to protect the coastal resouces by providing:
- coastal managers with skills to be able to conduct coastal monitoring
- data that will implement policies or assist in assessing the effectiveness of
policies designed to protect coastal environments and habitats

Comments:

1. Gasoline - WOW! Having worked in the marine field marine - obtaining
gasoline seems to be the major problem. We can probably request the GOB for a
subsidy - probably through the Fisheries Department OR even the Tourism
Department. I mean tourism depends on the resources we are trying to protect.

The GOB gives subsidies on gas - they give subsidies to fishermen on gas - so
that they fish more - so that the country can export more. (I remember that my
parents used to pay fuel for less when they filled their cane truck at the gas
stations.)

2. Precisely because work opportunity in the field of Coastal Zone Management
is scarce we need to develop education facilities in this study area. The lack
of expertise seems to be a major problem, people need to be trained to be able
to manage coastal resources. Coastal development as a result of tourism and
population growth are severely affecting our coastal resources, especially our
most valuable coastal resouce (THE BARRIER REEF). IF our goal is to be able to
manage our coastal resources, we need to start by educating the managers,
resource users, etc, thus the need to develop education facilities.

[In relation to marine monitoring, I suggest that bathymetric surveys and sea level
monitoring are considered to complement oceanographic studies that you are
contemplating. These should include the bathymetry of navigable rivers. In the
Caribbean watersheds of Nicaragua we have rivers with extensive tidal penetration.]

[In relation to the petrol consumption problems associated with marine monitoring
I would suggest that it may be possible to develop agreements with naval bases.
In this way simple monitoring tasks could be completed during routine patrols.
Another option may be to work with fishermen, in the case of Guatemala with trawlers
which are large and offer better working platforms.  In this way petrol consumption
could be minimised. With such agreements the use of catamarans could be
restricted to those studies that require more time and where sampling dates are
not flexible.]

[Foreign Volunteers. From a University viewpoint I feel this development could be very positive.
CEMA  can offer to host students in Sipacate and Monterrico, where there are excellent facilities
to study bar-mouth estuaries which are currently seen as problematical by our artesanal fishermen.
Before looking at treating these problem zones we need systematic study to understand the
cyclic sand movements. We are in a good position to develop exchange agreements, and
when there are more concrete developments we would like to begin to plan this type of
cooperation with foreign experts.]

Informacion sobre Boccabarras

8 July  2003 19:14:27

(Universidad Centroamericana) y Costa Rica (Universidad Nacional) encontramos

medios remotamente guiados (VOR).

Issue: Issue #G3. Using Volunteers in monitoring programmes - is this a practical proposition?
Date: 05/09/08
Time: 21:25

Comments:

As a relatively experienced conservation/community volunteer in Costa Rica and
the Galapagos, volunteer programmes are most definitely óf great value. Having
met with many volunteers and independent travellers there are most definitely
issues which volunteers frerquently discuss.

Most volunteers - from the US and Europe start their volunteer projects
through organisations based in their home countries. But the most common query
is - "where and how has my contribution (fee) been spent". Clearly these
volunteer organisations have people, offices and infrastructure to cover, so
we reckon a considerable percentage has to go in this direction. Certain
organisations are on the fringe of or directly involved in tourism; and the
eco-tourism label appears to be another revenue stream capturing student,
gapyear, career-break people. i-to-i for example sold out to First Choice and
others are most definitely into ´voluntourism´.

Organisations based in the UK/US/Europe do have associations with local
conservation organisations from whom they glean necessary information for the
information packs sent out to signed-up volunteers (another overhead). But we
definitely say for sure the information is often innacurate and out of date.

Definitely endorsing the need for the projects to be managed locally in terms
of attracting and informing volunteers. Not difficult if you have web and
email.

Our experiences have encouraged us to build and maintain a network of friends
and volunteers, and begin the search for communities in key biodiversity areas
where community and conservation programmes can run side-by-side. Costa Rica,
from experience, is a notably in-need area. Tourism and commercial and private
development is accelerating and communities increasing marginalised by
expensive all-inclusives.

This network is called madre tierra...amigo´s de and we are proposing
establishing these projects with/for these communities, identifying the key
community and conservation needs and starting projects around them. The main
difference being, once volunteers have selected their chosen project and
confirmed dates, they will pay for the project in-situ and discuss how their
contribution can be spent. When they are fully informed of what costs to the
madre tierra need to be made, they can take an active part in chosing how and
where the remainder is spent.

This is without doubt one of the things volunteers appreciate and it gives
them a sense of ownership, achivement and commitment which is often overlooked
or ignored - in our experience - from overseas organisations.

That said, my own personal experience with GVI in Tortuguero on a Marine
Turtle Conservation and Jaguar Preadtion project (run by COTERC) was agood
one, and I learned a great deal from the practical and theory-tested
procedures and protocols employed on base.

After a 2.5 month stint as a Tour Leader in the Galapagos, high school and
university pre/post grads have expressed a very keen interest in working
with/through madre tierra between semesters and during holidays. These people
are studying various Biology, Ecology, Sustainability and Education degrees
and have their eyes wide open when it comes to how and where they wish to use
their education and experience.

Of course booking a conservation programme from home does provide some initial
peace of mind in that you will have a support structure in your destination
country - me included at the outset - but soon after arrival people realise
they can do alot independently. Much of the ´local support´ messages enable
younger students and volunteer to convince their parents to let them go in the
first place - we think we can cover those bases more effectively, particularly
if we are based on project.

I hope I have provided a balanced critique, and look forward to continuing
dialogue with AMBIOS, whom I know are looking at this issue.

For the record, we have identified a project on San Cristobal island,
Galapagos, where a small dairy, fruit and vegetable farm needs to build
volunteer accomodation prior to welcoming volunteers to clear invasive non-
endemic plants (mora), plant maize (corn), grow the current livestock numbers
(60 Swiss Brown) and increase milk and yoghurt production to the point where
ship imports can be significantly reduced, or better, make the island self
sufficent. It is not good that the children are drinking imported milk from
cartons wher the milk id effectively 3+ weeks old!

...for mother earth
