.... los pescadores locales identificaron estos sitios como exelentes puntos para la pesca con anzuelo, y la informacion anectodita de esa gente nos da indicacion que los arrecifes tienen una biodiversidad rica. Han encontrado langostas, cangrejos, conchas y una variedad de peces.

... the local fishermen found the reefs to be ideal sites for line fishing. Their tales record a rich biodiversity, with reports of lobsters, crabs, conch and a variety of fish species.

Por lo mismo testimonio, hay evidencia de un disminucion reciente de la biodiversidad. Despues de generaciones de pesca utilizando metodos sostenibles, hoy dia hay presion por pescadores no Garifunas por el uso de nuevas tecnicas, talves causando daņo a los arrecifes.

By the same testimony, there is suggestion of recent decline in biodiversity. After generations of sustainable fishing, non-Garifuna fishermen are working the reefs using new methods which may be causing damage.

El objectivo general de nuestro proyecto es promover la conservacion y uso sostenible de los ecosistemas y recursos marinos de los arrecifes de la Bahia, a traves de su caracterizacion cientifica y la propuesta de mecanismos participativos para su adecuada proteccion y manejo The overall objective of our project is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the ecosystems and marine resources of the Bay reefs, through scientific study and through proposal of participative mechanisms  for  adequate  protection  and management
Objectivos Especificos:
  • Llenar los vacios de informacion cientifica sobre los ecosistemas submarinos, a traves de geoposicionamiento y evaluacion ecologica de los arrecifes de la Bahia de Amatique
  • Diseņar y proponer mecanismos pilotos de proteccion y co-manejo de estos ecosistemas con la participacion comunitaria de los pescadores Garifunas
  • Crear capacidad nacional para el estudio, monitoreo y manejo del lecho marino, con fines de proteccion ambiental y mantenimiento de su productividad biologica
Specific Objectives:
  • Infill gaps in our knowledge of the marine ecosystems, through mapping and ecological evaluation of the reefs of Amatique Bay
  • Design and suggest pilot mechanisms for the protection and joint management of these ecosystems, with the participation of the local Garifuna fishing community
  • National capacity building for the study, monitoring and management of the seabed, with the end goal of environmental protection and maintenance of biological productivity
