| "That morning I got up late as I had been patrolling the beaches for most of the night, with Jose, Frances and Ida, counting parlama tracks and collecting eggs from the locals. Although only 10 it was hot, the distant range of volcanic peaks that overlook the coast were shimmering in the heat, the black sand was nearly unbearable to my bare feet. Nikki was helping Luis to cook 'frijoles y huevos' for breakfast: The smell of the food, the inescapable rhythmic undertones of the huge swells breaking on the beach, the rustle of a soft wind through the stacks of drying sesame seeds in the nearby fields, the hesitant quiet talk in the kitchen as Nikki pushed her newfound Spanish to its limits - memories etched forever. Jon told me that they had released 38 hatchling turtles into the sea at dawn that day ......." |
“Esta mañana me levante tarde porque había estado patrullando la playa durante mucho tiempo de la noche, con Jose, Frances e Ida, contar las huellas de las parlamas y recolectar los huevos que la gente local debe proporcionarnos. Aunque solo las diez de la mañana y ya hacia calor, la cordillera distante de picos volcánicos que da a la costa estaba relucida en el calor, mis pies casi no soportaban la temperatura de la arena negra. Nikki estaba ayudando a Luis a cocinar el desayuno; el olor del alimento, los tonos rítmicos e ineludibles del oleaje enorme quebrando en la playa, el susurro de un viento suave por las pilas de ramas de sésamo secándose en los campos alrededor, la conversación tranquila y vacilante desde la cocina por el compartimiento del ingles y el español – memorias grabadas para siempre. Jon me dicho que ellos han liberado 38 tortuguitas neonatas al océano al amanecer de ese día ………” |
