  RED REGIONAL PARA LA CONSERVATION DE LAS TORTUGAS MARINAS EN CENTROAMERICA:

Guatemala tiene aproximadamente veinte tortugarios funcionando a lo largo de su costa Pacifica. Los números de huevos enterrados en cada tortugario durante la época 1999-2005 se demuestran en las graficas al lado derecho (los datos proveídos cortesía de CONAP, el Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas). Las graficas representan regiones geográficas distintas de la costa, yendo desde el oeste hasta el este. Se necesita dar cuenta que el eje “y” tiene una escala diferente en cada grafica, con líneas horizontales cada 2000 huevos por año.

Una de las metas del Proyecto Parlama es estimular la actividad en TODOS los tortugarios. En 2005 se han formado un red de operadoras de tortugarios en el sector oriente del país, y hubieron reuniones regulares y un desarrollo de actividades e ideas. Nuestras objetivos futuros son:

  • continuar en el apoyo logrado de la red de operadoras de tortugarios en 2005
  • ampliar la comunicación dentro de tal red para incluir operadoras en toda la costa y
  • estimular la conectividad entre las organizaciones en Guatemala y las de todos los países de CentroAmérica abordando el Pacifico.

No estamos pensando en crear una nueva red cuando actualmente existen líneas de comunicación, y esperamos que todo el desarrollo nuevo pueda pasar a través de la Red Regional para la Conservación de las Tortugas Marinas en CentroAmérica (RCA).

Guatemala has some twenty hatcheries operating along its Pacific coast. The numbers of eggs buried in each hatchery for the years 1999-2006 is shown in the diagrams to the right (data courtesy of CONAP, the Protected Areas Agency of the Guatemalan government). The diagrams represent different geographical regions along the coast, passing from the west to the east. Note that the y-axis has a different scale on each diagram (lines every 2000 eggs per year).

One of the objectives of Project Parlama is to stimulate activity in all the hatcheries. In 2005 an active network of hatchery operators was formed in the eastern sector of the coast, and regular meetings were held and developments made. Our future objectives are to:

  • continue to support the network of hatchery operators created in 2005
  • expand communication within this network to encompass the whole of the coast and
  • stimulate connectivity between Guatemalan hatcheries and those in all the other Central American countries bordering the Pacific.

We do not wish to invent new networks where there are existing lines of communication, and it is hoped that new developments can all take place through the Red Regional para la Conservacion de las Tortugas Marinas en CentroAmerica. (RCA).
